Methodology

Every size and dimension on this site comes from a brand's own published chart or a live product listing, checked on the date shown next to each row below. Where we couldn't confirm a brand's full size range, we show only the sizes we could confirm and say so.

Harness type calculation

The Harness Finder picks a type from your dog's support-need level first: occasional need (stairs, car rides only) always points to a sling, and full need (from standing up to whole-body support) always points to a full-body harness. Daily need falls back to the condition-specific type — for example, rear-support for hip dysplasia, a sling for CCL surgery recovery. See the symptom table on the home page for the full mapping and citations.

Size matching uses whichever measurement each brand actually sizes by: weight, chest girth, or both. When a size band's boundary is shared between two sizes (for example, Help 'Em Up's XS tops out at 25 lb and its S starts at 25 lb), the smaller size wins. Brands that size by something other than weight or chest girth — Walkabout (abdomen and upper-thigh circumference), GingerLead (a fabric-loop "towel test," no published bands) — aren't matched numerically; we show their chart or method instead.

Ramp length calculation

Required ramp length is L = H / sin(θ), where H is the height being climbed and θ is the ramp angle. There's no peer-reviewed veterinary standard for what that angle should be. What exists is a widely circulated recommendation — roughly 18-25 degrees — echoed across pet-mobility guides, and a simpler rule of thumb (ramp length ≈ 2.5× height) that works out to about 23.6 degrees. We use 18-20 degrees for dogs with a joint condition and ~25 degrees otherwise, and show both figures rather than picking one. CARE (caninearthritis.org) states the underlying reason: a ramp spreads the vertical load that stairs place directly on the joints across a longer, gentler slope.

Update policy

Size charts and product specs change. Each row above is dated to when we last checked it. If the date on a row looks old, confirm against the brand's own chart before ordering.

Affiliate disclosure

As an Amazon Associate, this site earns from qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on the Harness Finder and Ramp Calculator pages. Prices and reviews aren't shown here — check the Amazon listing for the current price. Some ramp listings (marked "not an affiliate link") go straight to the maker's own site because that product isn't sold on Amazon; they're included so the comparison covers the full market.
