Where the margin numbers come from

Small dogs need roughly 6-8" beyond body length, medium dogs 8-10", and large dogs 10-12" — dogs that stretch out to sleep need the longer end of their range. Weight isn't part of the calculation itself; it's used only to suggest which of those three margins to start from (under 25 lb small, 25-60 lb medium, 60 lb+ large), using the general breed-weight grouping common across pet retailers, not a single cited source.
