Dog Food Cost Calculator

The cheaper bag isn't always the cheaper food — a $40 bag with more calories per pound can cost less per day than a $30 bag that's less calorie-dense. Compare foods by cost per 1,000 calories, not price per bag. Enter both foods' price, package weight, and calorie density below.

Why cost per 1,000 kcal, not cost per bag

Bag price and bag weight alone don't account for how calorie-dense the food is — a smaller, pricier bag of a denser food can still work out cheaper per day than a bigger, cheaper bag of a less dense one, since your dog needs a fixed number of calories, not a fixed weight of food. Calories per kg is usually printed on the bag as the metabolizable energy (ME) value; if it's missing, check the manufacturer's website.

Tools for weighing out a fair comparison

A kitchen scale that reads in grams lets you weigh a day's portion of each food directly, instead of relying on cup measurements that vary by kibble shape.

If you're measuring by cup instead, a scoop with clear fill lines keeps portions consistent between feedings.
