Dog Life Expectancy by Breed

Median lifespan varies by more than a decade between breeds — from 15.4 years for the Lancashire Heeler down to 5.4 years for the Caucasian Shepherd Dog, in a 2024 study of 584,734 dogs under UK veterinary care. Type your breed below for its median and where it ranks among the 155 breeds this study had enough data to report on.

What this can't tell you

This covers 155 breeds — the ones the study had enough dogs to report a reliable figure for, not every recognized breed. Mixed-breed dogs aren't included here (the study's own crossbred reference median was 12.0 years). A median is the age half the dogs in the sample passed and half hadn't yet — it says nothing about your individual dog's health, and confidence intervals are wide for less common breeds with smaller sample sizes.
