On the 9-point Body Condition Score (BCS) scale, 5/9 is ideal. Each point above 5 corresponds to roughly 10% excess over ideal body weight — a BCS of 7/9 means a dog is carrying about 20% more than their ideal weight. That relationship is only published for overweight dogs; there's no equivalent weight-percentage figure for underweight dogs (BCS below 5), so this tool doesn't estimate a weight number in that direction. Where these numbers come from

The 5%-body-fat-per-point and 10%-excess-weight-per-point relationships are from the AAHA quantitative BCS guidance in theAAHA 2021 Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines, checked 2026-08-15. BCS is assessed by feel, not by eye alone — you need to run your hands along the ribs, waist, and tail base to score it accurately, and it's easy to be off by a point on a fluffy-coated dog. A vet or vet tech can confirm your score at a routine visit.
