Dog Weight Loss Calculator

Feed your dog's target daily calories at 80% of the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) for their ideal weight — not their current weight. AAHA's target rate is 1-2% of body weight lost per week, but dogs on real veterinary weight-loss programs typically lose closer to 0.8-0.9% per week, so this tool shows both timelines. Enter your dog's current and ideal weight below.

Where these numbers come from

Target intake (ideal-weight RER × 80%) and the 1-2%/week target rate are from theAAHA 2021 Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines and the 2014 AAHA Weight Management Guidelines, checked 2026-08-15. The real-world 0.8-0.9%/week figure is from a study of dogs on veterinary weight-loss programs (PMC5590893). If the calculated deficit is large, or your dog's target intake falls below 60% of their current-weight RER, talk to your vet before starting — that level of restriction needs supervision.

Tools for tracking the re-weighs

Re-weighing every 2 weeks is easier with a scale at home than a trip to the vet each time — a small platform scale weighs a dog directly.
